11" x 14" print - Nuthatches in the Jeffrey Pine

Regular price $30.00

On the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada, Jeffrey Pine (Pinus jeffreyi) stands fill the air with the smell of butterscotch. Jeffrey Pine needles provide food for caterpillars of the Pandora Moth (Coloradia pandora). In turn, the caterpillars are food for many bird species, including White-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis tenuissima). If the caterpillars survive long enough, they climb down the trees and pupate underground around the trees. The moth pupae and Jeffrey Pine nuts are both protein-rich meals for many hungry creatures foraging on the forest floor.
